A new report from the Social Security Administration’s inspector general shows that many more ex-Nazis were getting Social Security benefits than previously thought. An estimated $20.2 million was paid out to 133 people affiliated with Nazi Germany between February 1962 and January 2015. The four remaining beneficiaries saw their benefits stop after Congress unanimously passed the impossible-to-not-pass-unanimously No Social Security for Nazis Act last year. According to the Associated Press, “the Justice Department used a legal loophole to persuade Nazi suspects to leave the U.S. in exchange for Social Security benefits. If they agreed to go voluntarily, or simply fled the country before being deported, they could keep their benefits.”
