Ted Cruz Won’t Tell Megyn Kelly If He’d Deport the Children of Undocumented Immigrants

Ted Cruz took a page from Scott Walker on Tuesday night, essentially declining to take a position on the finer points of birthright citizenship. Unlike the Wisconsin governor, Cruz has made his general stance on the issue clear: He told CBS News last weekend that he does not think the children of undocumented immigrants should be U.S. citizens. But when Kelly asked whether he thinks that’s the correct interpretation of the 14th Amendment or wants to change the Constitution, Cruz went with “all of the above.” “My view is we should pursue either or both, whichever is effective,” he said. “What matters is that we should change the policy so we’re not rewarding, and incentivizing, and encouraging more illegal immigration.”

After another fruitless round on the legal issues, Kelly asked, “If you have a husband and a wife who are illegal immigrants, and they have two children who are here, who are American citizens, would you deport all of them? Would you deport the American citizen children?” “So, Megyn, what I’ve said is that we should approach immigration in a staged manner,” he said. “We should start with focusing on areas of bipartisan agreement. Where is there bipartisan agreement? On two major areas. Number one, that we should do everything possible to secure the border and stop illegal immigration. And number two, to improve and streamline legal immigration.”

Kelly made two additional attempts to get an answer out of Cruz, noting that Trump had no problem with the question (he would deport the kids). “Megyn, I get that that’s the question you want to ask. That’s also the question every mainstream-media liberal journalist wants to ask,” Cruz explained. Kelly asked if the question is “unfair,” and Cruz said it’s “a distraction from how we actually solve the problem. You know, it’s also the question Barack Obama wants to focus on.” So by asking basic questions Kelly isn’t just acting like a typical left-leaning journalist — she’s actually channeling the worst liberal of them all.
