Lost amid the hoopla surrounding last night’s GOP debate was the emergence of another presidential hopeful: 10-year-old Alena Mulhern.
Mulhern has had her eye on the presidency for some time now. But before she can draft an exploratory committee for her 2040 campaign — the first year in which she could legally run and at least a decade before she’d have to worry about running against Charlotte Clinton Mezvinsky — she’s going to have to pass a constitutional amendment. Mulhern was born in China and is thus constitutionally barred from occupying the Oval Office — even though she’s been an American citizen since she was 10 months old.
To clear this hurdle, Mulhern took her case to the Massachusetts State House on Wednesday, WBZ-TV reports.
Mulhern’s mother, Barbara Mulhern Caparell, told the local channel that she remembers when she first told her daughter that she wasn’t legally allowed to be president. “She said, ‘Well, that’s not fair.’ And I said, ‘What are you going to do about it?’ And she said, ‘I’m going to change the law.’”
Mulhern hopes to convince the Massachusetts State Legislature to pass a resolution calling for a constitutional amendment that would allow America’s patriotic, foreign-born citizens the opportunity to compete for their country’s highest office.
After finishing her argument on behalf of all foreign-born political hopefuls, Mulhern transitioned to making an advance case for her own candidacy, to be announced at a to-be-determined date in the distant future.
“I would be a great leader and bring people together. I would guide our country so it would be an even greater place to live, work and raise a family. And most of all, I love my country. I want to serve my country, and this is my country,” she said.
“Mulhern 2040” bumper stickers aren’t available as of this writing, but let’s hope it will only be a matter of time.
