Trump’s Anti-Muslim Comments Featured in Jihadi Recruitment Video

This was inevitable.

The Somali Al Qaeda affiliate Al Shabab has produced a recruitment video featuring anti-Muslim comments from GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump, according to the ABC News. The militant group’s 52-minute video, which has been authenticated by jihadist propaganda experts, is part of a series celebrating Somali-American jihadists who have died fighting in Somalia. The propaganda video aims to exploit racial tensions in the U.S. and inspire black Americans to convert to Islam and join the jihadist cause. It also features Trump’s comments calling for a ban on Muslim immigrants, as well as comments from unnamed white supremacists and footage of black activists protesting the abuse of black inmates in U.S. jails.

The specific Trump comment included in the video was from a speech in December when he indicated that he was “calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what the hell is going on.” That comment was juxtaposed with footage of Anwar al-Awlaki — the American Al Qaeda cleric who was killed in a U.S. drone attack in 2011 — warning that “the West will eventually turn against its Muslim citizens,” and that they would then have to make a choice to either leave or fight.

In the last Democratic debate, Hillary Clinton had said that Trump’s anti-Muslim comments were already being featured in jihadi recruitment videos, though no evidence then existed of any such videos and the Clinton campaign quickly walked the statement back. Trump subsequently insisted that he would not change his messaging even if such a video came to be made, a sentiment he repeated on CBS’s Face the Nation Sunday while specifically responding to the Al Shabab video. “They use other people, too,” shrugged Trump. “What am I going to do? I have to say what I have to say. And you [know] what I have to say? There’s a problem. We have to find out what is a problem. And we have to solve that problem.”

This post has been updated to include Trump’s response to the video.
