Woman Is Killed by Oncoming Train After Being Shoved Onto Subway Tracks at Times Square

A 49-year-old Queens woman died Monday after being pushed onto the subway tracks at the Times Square subway station. The victim was struck by an oncoming southbound 1 train, and died at the scene.

A 30-year-old woman was arrested at the station after witnesses pointed her out to police; she was led away in handcuffs by uniformed police officers. Witnesses say the suspect — who has not been named — appeared to be emotionally disturbed, and police sources told the New York Post that the alleged attacker has a history of mental illness. It’s still unclear if the two women knew each other; some allegedly saw the women arguing. But right now, police believe it was more likely a random attack. Authorities are also investigating whether the suspect might have been involved with a similar incident last month, reports the New York Times.

The horrific scene unfolded before 1:30 p.m. Monday at the busy transit stop, disrupting service into the evening rush on the 1, 2, and 3 lines. Police do have video of the fatal incident and are reviewing that evidence and interviewing bystanders who were on the platform and on the train. “What happened here today is tragic,” said NYPD transit chief Joseph Fox.
