The Great Fake Book: I’m Still Here

After a bit of a time-delay, my review of I’m Still Here is finally here, online. I enjoyed the movie hugely: I love watching nutty exhibitionists act out their insecurities, safe, in this case, in the realm of mockumentary. Let me add one thing: A tip-off that the movie is mostly fiction is that the subject of River Phoenix doesn’t come up—it’s off limits even in this supposedly emotionally naked context. And there’s no mention that Phoenix lost the Oscar for Walk the Line, which is maybe too sore a subject for parody, too. But every time I think of Julia Roberts’s announcement that she’d converted to Hinduism following Eat Pray Love, I bless Casey Affleck and Joaquin Phoenix for turning the celebrity epiphany into grand vaudeville.
