Yeah, so, Casey Affleck says it was an act but doesn’t like the word “hoax.” Where have I read that before? (The Times goes with my "performance art" designation, too, in its headline.) Did anyone but Roger think it might be real? Here’s my feeling about Ebert's review: Remember his run-in with that whack job Vincent Gallo, whom Phoenix often reminds me of in I’m Still Here? Years ago, Ebert trashed Gallo's demented The Brown Bunny at Cannes, Gallo said something disgusting about Ebert, and then Ebert re-reviewed the movie in a shorter version—and liked it! He sat down with Gallo—and sympathized with the high-strung and vulnerable young artist. He even got all protective about The Brown Bunny. I think Roger is such a big-hearted, pro-AA mensch that his first thought on watching I'm Still Here was, "We must get him to a meeting!" Has a public figure ever shed so much cynicism over the course of a lifetime?
