Campaign to Save Gate 2 of Old Yankee Stadium Running Out of Time

The folks trying to preserve Gate 2 of old Yankee Stadium got some bad news this week: The city's Public Design Commission gave its preliminary approval to the Parks Department's plans for commemorating the old stadium at what will eventually be called Heritage Field, and it doesn't involve keeping the gate. The Gate 2 group says they'll pursue legal action next, but they better hurry: The whole stadium is scheduled to be demolished by June. And if you're curious, the Parks Department plans for marking the site of the old stadium involve "putting in engraved plaques and preserving elements of the stadium frieze and the famous bat statue outside," according to the Daily News. Worth noting: The reason Gate 2 specifically is at the center of these efforts has to do with how little it changed during the seventies renovation. The frieze over the bleachers and the bat outside Gate 4? Both post-renovation elements. [NYDN]
