Let’s take a look at Mike Pelfrey’s ridiculous statistics for the month of April: 4–0, 0.69 ERA, one save. Pelfrey is responsible for more wins than the Baltimore Orioles. The rain that drenched Citi Field just in time last night helped that last one: He wasn’t as sharp in a 1-0 win over the Braves, but it didn’t matter. (He lost a complete game because Raul Valdes threw one pitch in the sixth before the tarp came out.) The Mets have now won six-of-seven on their homestand, with three more against the Dodgers before heading to Philadelphia, and they’re one game over .500, just a game and a half behind those Phillies. Don’t get too excited; last year the Mets were in first place on May 29, and we know how that turned out. But as ominous as the Mets’ fortunes looked a week ago … well, let’s say Jerry Manuel is sleeping a little better these nights. Even if we still think the man shouldn’t be allowed to put together a lineup without adult supervision.
