The Week the Yankees Moved Back Ahead of the Rays

The Yankees didn’t play their best ball in August, but at least they ended the month on a high note. And after eight straight days tied with Tampa Bay atop the East, they finally moved into first place by themselves while taking four straight from Oakland. Even A.J. Burnett pitched well this week — though not as well as CC Sabathia, who hasn’t lost at Yankee Stadium since last July. But what happened this week that didn’t involve scoreboard watching?

The U.S. Open kicked off at Flushing Meadows, and Andy Roddick’s already out.

The Mets kept on playing, albeit without Jeff Francouer.

Roger Clemens pleaded not guilty.

The U.S. Basketball team survived a scare against Brazil.

The Liberty advanced to the conference finals.

The Giants did not trade for Matt Leinart.

Rex Ryan took an anti-cheeseburger stance on Hard Knocks.

And we previewed the last five NFL conferences.

That’s it for us. Have a nice long weekend.
