George Steinbrenner Is on the Veterans’ Hall of Fame Ballot

Back in July, the Baseball Hall of Fame restructured its process for considering managers, umpires, executives, and long-retired players. Under the new format, a committee each year would focus on one of three different eras, with all candidates from the era appearing on a single composite ballot. First up is the Expansion Era that began in 1973, and George Steinbrenner is one of twelve names on the ballot announced yesterday. (Also up for election: Billy Martin, Ron Guidry, and Tommy John.) To be elected, candidates need to be named on twelve of the sixteen ballots, to be cast by an Expansion Era Committee that includes Johnny Bench, Jerry Reinsdorf, and Tom Verducci. (See the full committee here.) The results will be announced on December 6. [NYP]
