The United States Won’t Host the 2022 World Cup

FIFA has just announced the 2018 and 2022 World Cup hosts: Russia was awarded the 2018 tournament, while Qatar will host the 2022 tournament — the one the United States had submitted a bid for. The United States delegation made its final pitch yesterday in Zurich, where the likes of Bill Clinton, Morgan Freeman, Elle Macpherson, and Landon Donovan tried to persuade FIFA officials to vote for the United States, which hosted the tournament once before, in 1994. (Barack Obama also made a video presentation.) Instead, FIFA awarded the 2022 tournament to Qatar, which has promised to cool its outdoor stadiums with high-tech air-conditioning.
