The Russian Makes His Move: The Nets Get Deron Williams

You can’t say Mikhail Prokhorov handles defeat by rolling over and crying into his beets. (We doubt he eats beets, actually.) The Nets have shocked the NBA world by trading for Utah’s Deron Williams this morning, sending Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, and two first-round picks the Jazz’s way. Williams is an All-Star and one of the players whom the Knicks were targeting to join Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire in a couple of years. The move does embarrass the Knicks a little bit, considering Frank Isola of the Daily News postulates that they could have potentially traded for Williams and kept Danilo Gallinari. That said: Melo’s probably more fun, and the trade isn’t contingent on Williams signing an extension, which means he could still be a Knick in a couple of years. But yeah: Prokhorov really is making this into a war. This is gonna be fun.
