The Mariners Finally Won a Game This Afternoon

As we wrote this morning, the Mariners had reason to believe they might finally win again today, what with Felix Hernandez starting against the struggling Phil Hughes. And so this afternoon, Hernandez and the Mariners did indeed end their seventeen-game losing streak, beating the Yankees 9-2 in the final game of the three-game series. Hughes was better than he was in his last start, though considering how that outing went, that's not really saying much: He gave up two runs on nine hits in six innings today. (That said, the Yankees only trailed 2-1 when Hughes left the game; things got uglier once the bullpen took over.) Hernandez, by the way, has never lost in the new Yankee Stadium, and hadn't even allowed a run there until this, his third start at the ballpark. But before you start dreaming of a trade, know that Seattle GM Jack Zduriencik still insists he has no intention of dealing him.
