CC Sabathia: ‘I’m Right-Handed’

NEW YORK, NY - JULY 26: CC Sabathia #52 of the New York Yankees looks on from the dugout during the fifth inning against the Seattle Mariners on July 26, 2011 at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx borough of New York City. (Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images)

Yesterday, the Yankee Stadium scoreboard showed a video of CC Sabathia using his right hand to feed a giraffe at Busch Gardens during spring training. And so later on, a reporter asked Sabathia if he'd done this to protect his left hand — the one he, you know, pitches with. His answer? "No, I'm righthanded. I do everything with my right hand, including write. I played one year of T-ball righthanded and couldn't catch, was uncoordinated. My dad changed me over, gave me a lefty glove and it just took. But my right hand is my dominant hand." Sure enough, a quick image search confirms he uses his right hand to sign autographs. (He bats lefty, however. So perhaps it's more accurate to say he's mixed-handed.) On a related note: Has anyone checked with A.J. Burnett to see if he's ever tried throwing with his left hand? Maybe it would do him some good, too. [NYDN]
