Celebration of Jim Leyritz Won’t Stop the Newark Bears’ Beer Pong Tournament

The Newark Bears are planning a send-off for departing pitching coach Jim Leyritz as their season winds to a close. Leyritz, you’ll recall, was acquitted of DUI manslaughter last year, and as part of the Bears’ send-off, the team will make a $2,000 donation to Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Which is very nice of them. But they’ll do this on the same night as their weekly Thirsty Thursday promotion, which will proceed as scheduled — beer pong tournament and all. From a team press release, explaining the decision, via NJ.com: “Although a Beer Pong Tournament will be hosted that night, the owners thought by hosting this event with all parties and attractions, it would support the important need of how people can have fun responsibly.” By the way, the photo of Leyrtiz you see here was taken at the annual Artists vs. Writers softball game in the Hamptons this weekend. Leyritz, author of a book called Catching Heat, played for the Writers team. [NJ.com via Deadspin]
