You may recall last year's campaign, led by the New York Rangers Blog, to make Sean Avery an All-Star via write-in vote. Well, there's another write-in campaign under way this season, but this time, it's for a player who could make a legitimate case for inclusion on the team. You see, Dan Girardi, the Rangers' best defenseman (active player category), isn't on the ballot that will determine the first six players selected for the game. Instead, Marc Staal, their best defenseman (inactive player category) is.
And so the New York Rangers Blog is once again leading a write-in campaign, this time for Girardi. Even John Tortorella would surely support the campaign's mission: On Saturday — one day after the Rangers extended their winning streak to six games — he said that Girardi has "turned into an All-Star player." Of course, should Girardi — who is having a great season and leads all NHL skaters in minutes played per game — not get enough write-in votes to be among those first six players selected, it's still possible he could be picked to play in the game. And though it's probably true that stay-at-home defensemen have a harder time getting recognized, it's not impossible: After all, Staal was selected for last year's game. Fan voting began today.
