Why Vegas Wants the Giants to Lose

Head coach Tom Coughlin (R) of the New York Giants is interviewed by Terry Bradshaw after the Giants won 20-17 in overtime against the San Francisco 49ers during the NFC Championship Game at Candlestick Park on January 22, 2012 in San Francisco, California.

The Times has a piece on NFL futures betting today, explaining how some sports books took bets on the Giants to win the Super Bowl at odds as high as 80-1 this season. The Giants’ preseason odds weren’t quite so high — 20-1 at one sports book — but their midseason skid caused them to skyrocket. Our favorite quote, from Jay Kornegay, the director of the sports book at the Las Vegas Hilton: “I mean, they lost to Vince Young and the Eagles! We were lucky the bets didn’t come our way, but there are some tickets out there.” Oddsmakers, it seems, were as disgusted with that loss as Giants fans were. [NYT]
