A.J. Burnett’s First Spring Training With the Pirates Is Not Off to a Great Start

Last month, A.J. Burnett talked about how he was looking forward to a fresh start in Pittsburgh. "It's going to be fun," he said. "I'm going back to the National League, where I can hit and bunt and get the joy back into the game." But as Burnett learned yesterday, bunting isn't always quite so much fun: During a bunting tournament at Pirates spring training, Burnett redirected a pitch from a pitching machine into his face, drawing blood. (According to the AP, as he was being examined by a trainer, Burnett joked, "Where did the bone go?") He had to be helped off the field while holding a towel to his face, and though the Pirates haven't commented on the nature of his injury, he was scheduled to fly to Pittsburgh to have his right eye examined. (And yes, there's video.)
