The Drama in Orlando Today Has Nothing to Do With the Knicks
So, the Knicks are in Orlando to face the Magic tonight, but for once, they're not at the center of the day's pregame drama. See, earlier this week, Orlando TV station WKMG reported that Dwight Howard had demanded that coach Stan Van Gundy be fired and that Van Gundy and his coaches would have to go in order for Howard to sign a contract extension this summer. So today, the topic came up when Van Gundy met with reporters, and Van Gundy said that he was told by "people in our management" that Howard has indeed asked that he be fired as coach. Then things got really awkward.
Van Gundy fielded some more questions, and minutes later, Howard walked over, unaware of what Van Gundy had just said and put his arm around his coach. He even asked if David Pingalore, the WKMG sports director responsible for the original report, was present, calling him "the guy who started this b.s." Van Gundy leaves, and then as you'd imagine, reporters begin to grill Howard about what his coach had just said, with the Magic star left to deny the report that his own coach just said he understood to be true. And if that doesn't sound uncomfortable enough, yep, there's video.
Tip-off tonight, by the way, is at 7 p.m.
