The ACC Tournament Isn’t Coming to New York City

Fab Melo #51 of the Syracuse Orange goes up with the ball against Yancy Gates #34 of the Cincinnati Bearcats during the semifinals of the Big East men's basketball tournament at Madison Square Garden on March 9, 2012 in New York City. Fab Melo at the 2012 Big East Tournament.

Last year, after longtime Big East members Syracuse and Pittsburgh announced they were leaving for the ACC, the ACC's commissioner admitted the conference would look into staging its conference basketball tournament at Madison Square Garden, where the Big East has held its tourney since 1983. Said commissioner John Swofford then: "I don't think there's any question that taking a look at New York and Madison Square Garden would be very appealing for Atlantic Coast Conference basketball fans." Alas, it's not going to happen, at least not for a long while: The deadline to submit bids for the 2016–2021 ACC Tournaments has passed, and word from ESPN yesterday was that the Garden didn't submit a bid. Neither, by the way, did Barclays Center, which is set to host the Atlantic 10 Tournament for five years beginning in 2013. Sorry, New York City 'Cuse fans.
