The Rangers Have Moved Up in ESPN’s NHL Power Rankings, Somehow

Chris Kreider #20 of the New York Rangers looks to pass against the New Jersey Devils in Game Six of the Eastern Conference Final during the 2012 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs at the Prudential Center on May 25, 2012 in Newark, New Jersey.

A couple of weeks ago, ESPN placed the Rangers second in their first power rankings of the year, which mostly served as a depressing reminder that there wouldn't be a reason to update those rankings for a while, what with another lockout under way. How wrong we were, though! Via the New York Rangers Blog, ESPN has new rankings out this week, and John Tortorella's club has leapfrogged the Kings into the top spot. How'd they do that, without, you know, playing any games? Pretty simple: They didn't do anything, but a different writer, Pierre LeBrun (and not Scott Burnside), put this week's list together. We assume that if they cancel the entire season, they'll just award the Stanley Cup to whoever's atop these rankings, so let's hope the announcement comes during a LeBrun week!
