A-Rod Isn’t Starting Tonight

Alex Rodriguez #13 of the New York Yankees reacts after striking out during Game Three of the American League Division Series against the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium on October 10, 2012 in the Bronx borough of New York City.

Joe Girardi has made up his Game 3 lineup, and for the second time in these playoffs, Alex Rodriguez won't start. (If you're keeping track, Girardi has now pinch-hit for A-Rod three times and kept him out of the starting lineup twice.) Rodriguez will be joined on the bench tonight — at least at the beginning of the game — by Nick Swisher. Brett Gardner — who's had all of four at-bats since April — will start in left tonight, and Ichiro will play right. Eric Chavez will start at third against the right-handed Justin Verlander, and we'll note that with A-Rod on the DL in August, Chavez had a 3-for-4 day off against Verlander, during a game in which the Tigers ace was on. Then again, we'll also note that A-Rod has two homers off Verlander this year. Oh, and Eduardo Nunez is at short, so that should be fun.

Via the LoHud Yankees blog, here's the full lineup:

1. Brett Gardner (LF)
2. Ichiro Suzuki (RF)
3. Mark Teixeira (1B)
4. Robinson Cano (2B)
5. Raul Ibanez (DH)
6. Russell Martin (C)
7. Eric Chavez (3B)
8. Curtis Granderson (CF)
9. Eduardo Nunez (SS)
