Relief pitcher Brian Wilson #38 of the San Francisco Giants works the ninth inning against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on April 12, 2012 in Denver, Colorado. The Giants defeated the Rockies 4-2.

Brian Wilson Could Be Next Mets Freak Show

Honestly, if it hadn't been for that R.A. Dickey trade — you know, the one that was probably smart in a baseball sense but had the decided downside of shipping away the most popular player on the team, not to mention the guy who had just won the Cy Young Award a couple of weeks earlier — it's possible none of us would have even noticed the Mets this winter.

The Mets have been connected to a few players — Grady Sizemore, Francisco Liriano — but since the season ended, there hasn't exactly been a bum-rush of folks hastening to sign with the Mets. Here are the players they have added since trading Dickey, in order:

  • Jefry Marte
  • Josh Rodriguez
  • Aaron Laffey
  • Andrew Brown
  • Omar Quintanilla

So, yeah: Get excited. The Mets still have a ton of holes, a bit alarming considering pitchers and catchers report in 27 days. Here's a guess at the Met opening day lineup:

SS Ruben Tejada
2B Daniel Murphy
3B David Wright
1B Ike Davis*
LF Lucas Duda*
RF Mike Baxter
C John Buck/Travis d'Arnaud
CF Kirk Nieuwenhuis

That's pretty clearly the worst outfield in baseball, and that's not getting into defensive issues at second base, a thin (but getting there) rotation, and a potentially explosive bull pen. The Mets aren't spending any cash, obviously, so the bargain basement shopping continues, with general manager Sandy Alderson watching former Giants closer Brian Wilson pitch in L.A. over the weekend. Wilson had Tommy John surgery last season, and his brain is 49 percent beard at this point, but when you're looking cheap, you get cheap. There was some talk that the Mets were going to try to trade for Justin Upton, a smart move, but not if they have to give up Zach Wheeler or Matt Harvey, players the Diamondbacks were said to demand.

So, in other words, none of the holes are getting filled. But you knew that. At least there might be an extra beard hanging around. The question: Are you ready for this guy to be a Met?
