Larry Gelbart died last Friday. Gelbert wrote for Bob Hope and co-created M*A*S*H and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum — he was a gag writer, a caustic satirist, and an all-around mensch. I interviewed him for the first "Reruns" column I wrote. I later did a Q&A, one of my favorites, with him for the New York Times during the 2004 production of Sly Fox. We sat in the lobby of the theater; I could have talked to the guy for hours. It made me feel like I had the best job in the universe.
Here he is talking about his career, including writing for Bob Hope and the origins of TV writing.
