Campaign Trail

Gisele Bündchen Lands Dior Spring 2009 Campaign

At last some big campaign news has been confirmed! Gisele Bündchen will be the face of Christian Dior for spring 2009. The news leaked on her blog, which, unlike some fashion-philes, she doesn't profess to write herself (unless she's pulling a Suede and enjoys referring to herself in the third person, but we're pretty sure that's not her style). According to her blog, Gisele flew to Paris for the shoot. (You can see a shot of her at baggage claim in Charles de Gaulle airport here.) Nick Knight shot Gisele for the spring and fall Dior campaigns in 2004. Dior probably decided to shell out the big bucks for a commercial face this season to encourage consumers to shop. Because one of life's great truths is every girl wants to be exactly like Gisele. Really — what about her life sounds bad?

Given our antipathy toward Lauren Conrad's collection last season, it's metaphorically apt — not to mention pungent — that this time around we got stuck waiting in line next to a Dumpster; doubly so because, in the end, the garbage bin was all we got to see of her spring 2009 line.

Chrissie Miller of Sophomore Thinks There’s Plenty to Learn From Groupies

Chrissie Miller says she's been dressing the same since she was a kid, with a good pair of Levi's and a perfect T-shirt. But when it came to shopping for casual tees, the simplest things were the hardest to find. So she made them herself. Miller's line, Sophomore, capitalizes on affordable basics for men and women. The pieces are simple, contemporary, and yet edgy, capturing the chill essence of the downtown scene (Jen Brill and Bijou Phillips starred in her look books, and Cass Bird photographed them). We caught up with Miller to talk trends, urban inspiration, and what you can learn from films about groupies.

Michelle Kwan to Design a Clothing Line

Michelle Kwan

Olympians from the Beijing Summer Games are riding high on endorsement deals, but let's not forget about our wintry athletic friends. Last night we ran into figure skater Michelle Kwan, clad in a dress by Olympic uniform designer Ralph Lauren, at the 29th Annual Salute to Women in Sports Awards Dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria. We asked if she has her own clothing line in the works, like gymnast Nastia Liukin. And what do you know? She does. Kwan disclosed she's been approached to do her own line but wouldn't reveal by whom. Perhaps the ink's not dry yet? "I've been talking about a line for younger women — athleticwear, inspired by yoga and exercise and fitness," she said. We hope her stuff has the same glittery flair as those skating leotards. Yoga classes are just so muted these days.

Marc Jacobs Wore High Heels to Feel How Women Suffer for Fashion

At this week's Cinema Society premiere of Filth and Wisdom, Madonna's directorial debut, Marc Jacobs showed up wearing a skirt. However he paired it with boots and socks rather than the high heels he wore to his Louis Vuitton show in Paris. He said those were by Rick Owens. "I don't always wear high heels," he explained, adding he feels empathy for women who do. "I always get nuts when women go, 'Oh, men don't know what it's like — women in heels, women in skirts, women in dresses — what it's like to suffer for fashion.'" He continued, "Although I've always wanted to be taller, which is the real reason I wore them, I also thought I can show that I, too, will suffer for fashion." How did he fare? "It wasn't really suffering at all. It was a pleasure to be able to achieve a look that I wanted to look like." Jacobs added he has no problem walking in heels and his feet hurt at the end of a long day even if he's wearing sneakers. "I like wearing skirts and high heels and stuff like that. I don't see it in a way that it's like women suffering. I see it in a way it's like women get to have all the fun." Touché.

Fug Girls: Handicapping the Next ‘Project Runway’

The arrival of Project Runway's fifth-season finale is bittersweet for us: sweet, because this uninspiring season never lived up to its early promise and we're glad to have a break, and bitter because — if the state of the Weinstein/Lifetime lawsuit is any indication — that break might last a little bit longer than we'd like. Still, we at least hoped Project Runway would leave Bravo with a bang; sadly, short of Kenley spiking Tim Gunn's morning latte with gunpowder, it's unrealistic to expect any real surprises. But that hasn't stopped us from laying down some odds on the winner — and hey, we've been wrong before. Twice, actually. So maybe there's room for our jaws to drop after all.

Activists Upset by Madonna’s Gun Shoes

We think these are fierce. So sue us.Photo: WireImage

The world might have Madonna's divorce on the brain, but we're still hung up on the shoes she wore to the screening of her film Filth and Wisdom Monday night in New York. The platforms with guns for heels were a highlight of Karl Lagerfeld's Chanel 2009 resort collection. But a British anti-violence group found the shoes offensive and has labeled Madge "uncaring."

Lyn Costello, from Mothers Against Murder And Aggression, says, "I am horrified that Madonna can see these shoes as fashion. Celebrities have a massive part to play and an icon like Madonna should have more sense.

"It's uncaring. Surely she reads the news and realizes that young people are dying every day."

Oh, give Madge a break, lady. She's getting divorced while on a grueling world tour, her new movie's getting panned, and hardly anyone's saying anything nice about her clothes these days. Can't she enjoy her footwear?

Girl Power

Inside Diane Von Furstenberg’s Wonder Woman Comic Book

Diane Von Furstenberg celebrated the launch of her Wonder Woman–inspired holiday collection last night at her studio. The way she buzzed around the room, zipping in and out of people, jetting out early to catch a plane to Asia, made her seem like a superhero in her own right. So we asked her what superhuman power she would have if she could, and she said: "I would destroy all weapons." But how would you destroy all weapons without using a weapon? "I don't know. I'd just do it." She also said she'd wear a jersey dress and call herself Super Diane. Heroic! But perhaps the biggest highlight of the collection is the comic book she penned to go along with it called The Adventures of Diva, Viva & Fifa, illustrated by Konstantin Kakanias, and published by DC Comics. The book is a limited edition for the holidays, available in store or online for $25. One hundred percent of proceeds benefit Vital Voices, a nongovernmental organization that embodies Von Furstenberg's goal to empower women to find inner strength on a global scale. We got our eager little hands on the comic and its inspirational pages, which includes an original story by Diane Von Furstenberg, a letter by Lynda Carter, and an introduction by Gloria Steinem, so be your own Wonder Woman (or Man) and click ahead for the slideshow to check it out.

Christmas isn't coming early this year. It's coming right on Christmas — when Thakoon's Target collection launches. Yes, the sportswear collection by one of Michelle Obama's favorite designers hits stores Christmas Day so plan to take a break from the eggnog bowl for a little shopping. Designer Thakoon Panichgul told WWD, "[Target was] very easy to work with. They wanted a lot of prints, and I chose silhouettes that have done well in the past." Sounds like we'll be getting Michelle Obama fare, which means we can all dress like her for New Year's! Screw the clubwear — conservative printed dresses are where it's at. Oh, we're dead serious. You'll not only stand out from the crowd, but if you spill ten drinks on yourself (we said dress like Michelle, not act like Michelle), it'll be okay since the dresses are inexpensive. Also it probably won't even show up on those patterned fabrics.

Season's Giftings

December ‘Vogue’ Gift Guide Items All Under $500

Hamish Bowles with Diane Von Furstenberg

One of Anna Wintour's holiday elves told us Vogue's holiday gift guide would include only items under $500. Last night at Diane Von Furstenberg's Wonder Woman launch party benefiting Vital Voices, Vogue editor-at-large Hamish Bowles confirmed the rumor. So what can we expect? "Fabulous items under $500 across all spectrums — home, fashion, accessories," he said. "There are some amazing people onboard, and we pulled a lot of people in. It'll be out in December. No more details." So it's unclear if, say, Karl Lagerfeld — or maybe A-Dubs herself — will appear wearing something from Target's Go collections, but at least we know Vogue's in tune with the economic climate. Albeit in their special $500 Vogue way.

We Wish Sofia Coppola’s Louis Vuitton Collaboration Excited Us More

Sofia Coppola

Sofia CoppolaPhoto: Getty Images

We wanted to be excited about Sofia Coppola's handbag and shoe collections for Louis Vuitton. But the article about Sofia and her new accessories in the International Herald Tribune isn't exactly pumping us up.

At the age when Marie-Antoinette was facing the rigid etiquette of the court of Versailles, the 15-year-old Coppola was working as an intern at Chanel in Paris, a city that her parents had always loved.

Wait — she's not just like us?

"I like to be comfortable because I am Californian — nothing too severe or feeling I am wearing costume." She recalls the 1980s in Paris as a time when she wore "ripped and faded jeans" and "shell jackets" and loved the fun Italian brand Fiorucci.

Never mind. We guess we had a tacky Fiorucci phase too.

Lindsay Lohan Wasn’t Allowed to Attend Alexander Wang’s Show

LiLo

Get your legs ready, ladies! Because now you can purchase Lindsay Lohan's 6126 line without those bothersome shipping and handling charges. Last night LiLo launched the stretchy things at our very own Henri Bendel — mom Dina and sister Ali in tow — with more than 300 fans looking on, screaming, and possibly flailing. Lohan wore a smashing Rick Owens dress, Yves Saint Laurent shoes, and 6126 leggings but revealed that Alexander Wang is one of her favorite designers.

“I wanted to go to his show so bad, but his publicist said they weren’t allowing any celebrities to attend,” she said. “So I said, ‘Consider me a normal person then!’ But they wouldn’t.”

That's interesting. Because we were at Wang's show, and celebrities sitting front-row included Jessica Szohr, Daisy Lowe, and Mark Ronson. We guess Wang's team didn't want someone as famous as Lindsay, who attracts photographers and chaos like a magnet does iron filings, and can't help but steal attention from the clothes. But still — being exiled from the Wang show? Lindsay, if you need a hug, ours are free.

And you'll want a piece — their shift dresses and skinny pants are divine. The minimalist décor is inspired by the 1920 German Expressionist silent film The Cabinet of D. Head for the Hills

Audrina Heats Up ‘The Hills’

Audrina Heats Up ‘The Hills’

Photo: Courtesy of MTV

Was it naïve to expect that an episode focusing on Audrina’s turbulent love life would be awesome? Yes, yes, it was. Here’s what last night’s episode boiled down to: Talking about Justin Bobby is a lot less entertaining than actually being in his scruffy presence. Even though the entire half-hour was devoted to exploring Audrina’s complicated (and tragically unrequited) feelings for J.B., we only got to see the dude once. We’ll admit, though, that when he finally did appear, he certainly delivered.

The episode begins with Audrina in Lauren's room: “This is so cute, you have pictures everywhere,” says Audrina, who apparently has never seen Lauren’s room, even though they LIVE IN THE SAME HOUSE. Audrina tells her that she spent the weekend with an Australian guy named Cory, and the girls discuss how Audrina should not feel guilty about this, since Justin Bobby hasn’t asked her for a commitment. Audrina on J.B.: “I don’t know, he’s a weird one. I don’t get him.” Lauren: “But that’s why you like him!” No, Lauren, that’s why WE like him. Audrina likes him because she harbors an immature and perverse need to feel bad about herself.
