A.F. Vandevorst

The Label

Despite much critical acclaim, AF Vandevorst, launched in 1998 by Antwerp-based duo Filip Arickx and An Vandevorst, remains one of the more under-the-radar lines of the distinctly Belgian breed that includes Dries Van Noten, Martin Margiela, Olivier Theyskens, and Raf Simons. What’s often described as an artsy and intellectual aesthetic translates into imaginatively tailored, asymmetrical looks—a favorite among the Belgian bunch.

The Look

Artfully tailored separates—deconstructed oxfords, pleated skirts, and shirtdresses sometimes layered with lingerie—in a sober palette.

The Designer

After graduating from Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts, An Vandevorst worked under Dries Van Noten before joining her husband and fellow Royal Academy graduate Filip Arickx to start AF Vandevorst. In addition to working on their signature collection, Arickx and Vandevorst have designed men’s and women’s collections for Italian brands Ruffo Research and Allegri as well as the costumes for the New York Theatre workshop’s production of Susan Sontag’s Alice in Bed.
