Allegra Hicks founded her eponymous clothing, accessories, and home-furnishings label in 1998, opening her first shop in London’s Chelsea Green three years later. The designer studied art, textiles, and design in Milan, Brussels, New York, and London before breaking into fashion, giving her wares a European, artistic sensibility. Hicks is known as the “Queen of Caftans,” and her ready-to-wear and resort collections consist of gauzy, beachy dresses in short and full-lengths, as well as a summery array of flowing Empire-waist and halter styles. She officially launched her London flagship on Pont Street in September 2003, decorated to look like a Victorian home by her husband, interior designer Ashley Hicks. Though the clothing is carried at stores like Saks and Bloomingdale's in New York, Hicks opened a flagship on Madison Avenue in 2007. She raised eyebrows with her fall 2008 line, branching out from her breezy vacation style with a pin-striped suit, printed silk cocktail dresses with plunging necklines, and opulent, fur-trimmed coats.
“I admire the practicality of clothing—a dress is exactly that, a dress. It has no pretense to any form of intellectualism. Even though the process of making the dress may be intellectual, in the end, it is still a dress. I love that about it.”—Allegra Hicks The Luxe Chronicles
