Anna Sui

The Label
Anna Sui is one of the coolest names in American fashion. What started in 1980 as a small label blossomed in the early nineties as editors fell for Sui’s charming and cheery designs. A lover of pop culture, Sui taps into all decades and motifs equally, depending on which way her mood swings. But her clothes can never be called “retro” or “derivative.” In her hands, sixties mod-istes, seventies glam rockers, eighties Jazzercisers, and nineties grunge addicts all look au courant.
The Look
Good-time girls with great senses of humor and style.
The Designer
Born in Detroit in the fifties, Sui studied later at Parsons School of Design where she met and befriended Steven Meisel. Before creating her label, she worked as a stylist, often on Meisel’s early photo shoots. For much of the eighties, Sui ran her label out of her New York apartment, but after her debut on the runway in 1991, her business boomed. The following year she opened a flagship on Greene Street and then launched a successful beauty line.
