Launched in 1992, the Atil Kutoglu label is known for exotic, richly textured clothes with a Turkish flavor. That translates into lots of tunic necklines, genie pants, and spice-market colors. But there are always modern twists, such as the merging of luxe materials with funkier ones—leather with rich brocades, denim with mousseline and velvet. Think Scheherazade at the ball.
“I use Ottoman, Turkish and Byzantine inspirations from our culture and present them in a very modern way.”—Atil Kutoglu Associated Press Worldstream
“His clothes have an irreverent air. He will, for instance, put a black leather body suit over fuchsia pants, or pair an iridescent organza jacket with a fake fur skirt. He makes clothes for young people with a pop sensibility.”—Bernadine Morris The New York Times
“I want always to do new things. I never want to repeat myself. If you do that, fashion is boring. A designer should be always bringing new ideas and new shapes to fashion. They may at first not seem wearable, but if they are good, they catch on.”—Atil Kutoglu The New York Times
