The Label
Venezuelan-born Carolina Herrera designs precisely crafted creations that hint at couture. Founded in 1981, her internationally renowned company encompasses perfume and accessories lines that are as crucial as her fashions; nearly ten men’s and women’s fragrances have been created in conjunction with Antonio Puig since 1988. With a business reputation that’s on par with fellow designers Oscar de la Renta and Bill Blass, Herrera’s clothing mirrors the designer’s own sophistication and class, and puts a modern spin on Old World charm.
The Look
Sleek, chic and glamorous. Evening dresses and gowns in moiré satin, sweeping ball skirts paired with crisp white cotton shirts and broadtail cocktail dresses. For day, trumpet skirts and 1940’s tweed suits.
The Designer
As glamorous as her well-heeled collections, Carolina Herrera, who was born in Caracas, Venezuela, descends from of a long line of landowners and statesmen. The mother of four girls, Herrera had never worked outside the home until she decided to try her hand at fashion; her only previous experience was collaborating with couturiers on her own made-to-order clothes, and attending runway shows since the age of thirteen (her first was Cristobal Balenciaga’s.) After receiving positive feedback on a test collection she created in 1980, Herrera moved her family to New York and formed her fashion company one year later. She has won many fragrance awards worldwide and was presented with the 2004 CFDA Women’s Designer of the Year honor.
