MBA-wielding Julie Chaiken started her sportswear line in 1994 to fill what she saw as a gaping fashion void: the lack of stylish, urban designs for young, active women. Acting as owner and president of Chaiken, the San Francisco native brought in designer Jeff Mahshie in 1998 to help expand the line, which now includes swimwear, eveningwear, and maternity wear. Put on the map by the famous "Chaiken pants," Mahshie designs smartly tailored sportswear that has its roots in menswear detailing.
