With Mary J. Blige, Rachel Zoe, and Hilary Duff.
Helmed by brothers Dean and Dan Caten, the Dsquared label combines outdoorsy details (fur-trimmed coats, plaid, chunky knits) with a glam-rock aesthetic (deconstructed corsets, biker jackets, hand-stitched denim). The attire, and the denim in particular, is a favorite among musicians like Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, and Madonna, who asked the duo to create more than 150 pieces for her 2002 Drowned World Tour. The brothers opened their flagship store in Milan in 2007, complete with an exclusive Champagne bar, and subsequently launched locations in Capri, Kiev, Istanbul, and Hong Kong.
“The precision of the original wild style gelled so neatly with the Catens' own knack for detail. Trackie stripes on a white suit made for a new evening look. A three-piece denim suit looked sharp. So did a safari shorts suit. And maybe it was the context, but the tailored-jacket-collar-and-tie-with-the-sporty-lower-half thing that the Catens have worked for eons looked fresh again.”—Tim Blanks Men.Style.com
“Dan and Dean are identical twins until you get to know them. On deeper inspection they are both quite unique monsters. They began as cross-dressing nightclub promoters, and in 10 years have built up a fashion business that brought in nearly $70 million last year. It's a classic drags-to-riches story and should be made into a film. They are the gay gremlins of Milan.”—Rupert Everett Vanity Fair
“DSquared2 has achieved cult status among men for a look that's not so much homo, hetero or metro-sexual: just sexual.”—James Sherwood The Independent
