Daily Fashion & Runway News
Although Isabel Toledo has been producing her line since the mid-eighties, it wasn't until First Lady Michelle Obama wore her designs—including the lemongrass inaugural suit—that the critically lauded label garnered national name recognition. Alongside husband, collaborator, and he-muse Ruben, Toledo sketches out her designs in their midtown loft, which functions as living quarters, studio, and sometime boutique. The look is structured with intricate details and modest hemlines and necklines, although Toledo's been known to flirt with the avant-garde. Time will tell whether the First Lady will cotton to Toledo’s more surrealist looks, like the “Packing Dress” and the “Hermaphrodite.”
“When you wear something for the first time, it should surprise you with a rush of feeling you weren't expecting—the ephemeral feeling, perhaps, of being happy with yourself.”—Isabel Toledo The New Yorker
“My muse is the world around me. I am inspired by the beauty of every day life and my surroundings. I am a very appreciative observer.”—Isabel Toledo Clear Magazine
“Toledo Studio is not a brand or corporation. It is our creative home as long as Ruben and I are alive. There is no quitting allowed here. For us, what we do is like breathing and it is not very good to hold your breath!”—Isabel Toledo Clear Magazine
“Long considered a designer's designer because of her attention to craft and her sensitivity to unusual detail....”—Cathy Horyn The New York Times
“A lot of people think of her as arty and avant-garde, and she is.... She's also one of our greatest American designers and in a way that goes back to the tradition of Claire McCardell.”—Valerie Steele The New York Times
