Brazilian-born, London-based designer Daniella Helayel launched Issa in 2003. Since its early stages, the label has focused on creating silk jersey dresses in silhouettes and styles that make women feel comfortable, confident, and chic. By 2005, the label garnered a number of celebrity supporters, and in November 2010, received global attention when Kate Middleton wore a long-sleeved sapphire-blue Issa dress to announce her engagement to Prince William. In 2011, the designer announced plans to expand her label into a global brand by relaunching her business in the U.S., opening six stores in Brazil, and launching a children's line called Baby Issa.
