Daily Fashion & Runway News
Ever since his Central Saint Martin’s graduate show, Galliano has generated buzz — both for his wild persona and his fantastical runway shows. In addition to over a decade at the helm of Christian Dior, he has held fast to his eponymous label, which includes sunglasses and fragrance. With the renewal of his Dior contract, the John Galliano label is going under the LVMH umbrella, ensuring an even higher profile for the designer, whose era-juggling, sensibility-mixing collections keep him at the tip-top of high fashion. In March 2011, Galliano was dismissed from the label following the release of video footage of his anti-Semitic comments. His successor has yet to be determined.
“Galliano's shows make a mockery of solemn fashion reporting. He knows, and we know, that no one would ever wear a 12-foot-wide crinoline over a baggy pair of printed drawers with, perhaps, a pair of plastic carrier bags on the feet. He's not even suggesting it. Perhaps what he's saying with this crazy scavenger look is that most canny shoppers simply pick over current fashion to appropriate what they want to add to a lifetime's collection of personal treasures. He is not one to laboriously dictate what goes with what.”—Sarah Mower Style.com
“I love women. I love work. Hide that tummy, elongate that neck, shade the butt. I enjoy it. I'm an accomplice to helping women get what they want.”—John Galliano Interview Magazine
“But there is the fact of his talent, which rises up to greet you like a brick wall. It is unavoidably great. In two decades, he has staged at least half a dozen shows that people still vividly remember.”—Cathy Horyn The New York Times
