John Varvatos

The Label
In 2005, John Varvatos received the CFDA’s Menswear Designer of the Year award. It marked his fifth anniversary in the business, one in which he built a label that style-craving men seek out for easy but upscale looks that don’t scream fashion or trend. Lest anyone think he designs without a cool factor, though, Varvatos outfitted guitarist Joe Perry for Aerosmith’s most recent tour. Now Varvatos oversees men’s fragrance, footwear, and home, and he recently launched a women’s collection and one for Converse.

The Look
Effortless American sportswear for both sexes.

The Designer
The Detroit native received his greatest design education on the floors at Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein, where he learned the roots of American style. He was responsible for the launch of Klein’s men’s collection and, after returning to Ralph Lauren in 1995, started up the highly lucrative Polo Jeans Company.

Who Wears It
