London-based designer Paul Smith has been turning “proper” men’s and women’s fashion on its proverbial ear since he abandoned his dreams of being a competitive cyclist and started his own label in 1976. The brand is known for putting a twist on classic schoolboy and -girl looks, in the form of superbright stripes, loud prints, contrasting colors, and extra-sharp tailoring. Best known for the men’s collection, Paul Smith now includes women’s and ten other categories, including accessories, shoes, and furniture.
“The clothes allow people to express their character rather than overwhelming it. That's why I have a lot of creative people as customers because they appreciate that. It's the difference between being a dandy and a fop. A dandy is into the way he looks and a fop is an attention seeker. Paul Smith is for the dandy element.”—Paul Smith “The Prince of Ties,” The Guardian
“As with many of fashion's most successful brands, Smith's aesthetic represents a simple idea: that is, classic with a twist. This concept - the traditional single-breasted suit given an eyepoppingly bright lining, say - might have become a clichè of modern menswear, but it was Smith who first articulated that now-familiar idea and was canny enough to parlay it into a global success story.”—Susie Rushton The Independent
