Peter Som may have been touted as the next Michael Kors in the earlier part of his career, but the young designer has quickly established his own distinct aesthetic. Since its spring 2001 debut, the label has been celebrated by industry leaders, winning Som numerous accolades, including consecutive nominations for the CFDA’s prestigious Swarovski Perry Ellis award and a finalist spot for the Vogue/CFDA fashion fund. Som spent a year furthering his expertise in American sportswear as creative director for Bill Blass but left in 2008 to focus on his namesake label. Clean lines and flattering cuts—“curvilinear,"as Som put it—in easy, romantic fabrics are his hallmark.
“The Peter Som look is romantic, it's a little dreamy. My girl is a little bit of a 'head-in-the-clouds' kind of girl. There's a beauty, a lightness about her.”—Peter Som The Oregonian
“If Ralph Lauren is a whale of a talent, Peter Som is plankton. And I mean that in a good way. His work is delicate; it's nourishing. At Som's refreshing show, somewhere between the first look … and the last muslin gown … it became emphatically clear that he had moved to the head of his generational class. Magna cum laude, in fact.”—André Leon Talley Vogue
“Mr. Som is one of the best young designers working today, and his collection was a delight. He embraced all those uptown fabrics, like cloqué and lace, but he kept a distance from the embalmed attitude they represent.… As with everything in this forward-thinking collection, it was done with a lightheartedness that fashion now craves.”—Cathy Horyn The New York Times
