Rebecca Taylor

The Label

Like her signature logo of frolicking black cats, Rebecca Taylor’s clothes exhibit a sexy, playful and kittenish quality. They’re also characterized by delicate, romantic fabrics and cuts, obsessive detailing and the use of bold colors, all of which has helped endear the line to basic-black-eschewing celebrities like Ashley Judd and Cameron Diaz. : "I have a very ethereal sensibility,” Taylor explains. “I'm fascinated by anything that sparkles or anything that looks translucent—anything that has a bit of romance or magic about it.”

The Look

Flirty and feminine in a sophisticated and romantic—not giggly—way. Sheer, layered fabrics and flashes of metallic detailing drape over leg-elongating pants and swishy skirts; cocktail dresses that, though muted, stand out thanks to their ethereal beauty.

The Designer

After studying fashion at the Wellington School of Design, New Zealand native Rebecca Taylor—who once also seriously considered a career as a mime—got her foot in the door of the fashion industry by working as an assistant for Cynthia Rowley. She stayed with Rowley for six years before leaving to develop her own line with business partner Elizabeth Bugdaycay. In 2000, Taylor opened her flagship store in Japan, and has been a fixture on the international runway circuit ever since; that same year, she was also nominated for the prestigious CFDA Perry Ellis Award in Womenswear.
