Parsons grad José Ramón Réyes started working on his own line of basics in 2001, launching with a collection of T-shirts, albeit remarkably constructed versions made with Italian fabrics, top-stitched seams, and special details like elasticized organdy trims. With the contemporary sportswear market already a crowded place, it wasn’t until fall 2005 that he expanded into ready-to-wear. He’s since applied his modern mind-set to preppy, boating-inspired attire, eighties-inflected sportswear, and an homage to Wes Anderson’s Margot Tenenbaum. In 2008, Reyes won the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation award for his efforts.
“Every season there's a new challenge.... I feel that the more the business grows the more challenging it gets. At the same time I also grow as an individual and therefore learn to deal with the stress and the challenges in a different manner.”—José Ramón Réyes FabSugar
“José Ramón Réyes said his Spring collection was designed for a gallerina, a downtown art-world type who 'isn't afraid of a little geek-chic.' She'll have to be arty to pull off his asymmetrically draped dresses and the bra- and panty-revealing sheer neon jumpsuits that poufed out at the hips. This was a bold new direction for Réyes, who ... not long before that was making user-friendly, on-trend sportswear. 'Cute' is the word that comes to mind in connection with Réyes' earlier efforts, and the camp shirts he showed today fit that bill, with their epaulets at the shoulders and little ties at the neck. Most of his new offerings, though, could more aptly be described as challenging.”—Nicole Phelps Style.com
