What began as a collection of whimsical neckpieces in fall 2004—from gorgeous mink collars to crystal-encrusted shoulder harnesses—has morphed into a popular line of ready-to-wear. Designers Brian Wolk and Claude Morais favor a hip Victoriana aesthetic; collections are filled with sturdy tweeds and nubby wools, and often showcase silky blouses featuring dramatic bishop or belled sleeves. Their silhouettes have a vintage feel without being musty or fussy, although the prices are anything but throwback: Blouses start at $800, and jackets run $1,800 and up.
“Brian Wolk and Claude Morais have a rarefied vision. They make confectionary-sweet clothes for the good life and seem not to care too much about their hip quotient.”—Nicole Phelps Style.com
“There's more to the Ruffian girl than being a pretty young thing. Instead, designers Brian Wolk and Claude Morais go for an androgynous sensuality and sex appeal of the modern garonne. Think cabaret mistress in a smoke-filled room, with cigarette holder in hand. In Ruffian terms, that translates into silk velvet dresses in deep chocolate and plum, full accordion-pleated frocks and printed, pin-tucked blouses in sheer crepe de chine, all executed with a backward glance at Paris in the Twenties.”—Women's Wear Daily Staff Women's Wear Daily
