The conceptual line from New York–based designer Mary Ping, Slow and Steady Wins the Race is meant to be a comment on the saturation of luxury brands. The collections are released in limited numbers bi-monthly as a “clothing diary,” with each piece priced around $100. The ideology as well as the clothes, like sweatshirt capes and canvas handbags that replicate designer originals, have reached an international audience and have been embraced by names like Björk and Sarah Jessica Parker and boutiques like Opening Ceremony and Lane Crawford.
“In a week where, for half of the shows, you might as well have checked your brains at the door, you can count on S&SWTR founder and designer Mary Ping to deliver something cerebral.”—Suleman Anaya Hint Mag
“What I've done, I hope, is to approach each collection in a simplified way—to appeal to a large audience, to be democratic—while still going beyond an initial twist or irony. For example, I've kept it seasonless: Everything I made five years ago is still available. I want to break the rule that fashion has to constantly change and that you can't wear something from two seasons ago.”—Mary Ping Art Forum
