With Venus Williams, Elizabeth Banks, and Sean Avery.
With the success of her bridal line bringing in enough revenue for her to finally pursue her true love, Vera Wang launched a ready-to-wear line in 2004. Decorative, feminine and artsy-intellectual, Wang favors the long and lean, with a keen interest in silhouette and a passion for the sheer and textural. A favorite of red-carpet clientele, the RTW line has garnered a devout following. Allure’s creative director (and former co-worker of Wang's) Paul Cavaco notes: “Vera loves clothes beyond loving clothes; she loves everything that has to do with clothes. This is not a make-believe love here; it’s the real thing.” And speaking of love, Wang is perhaps best-known for her romanticism. Whimsical and feminine without looking saccharine, luxurious materials get worked and finessed with a singular flourish. She’s also a history buff who, in the past, has looked to everything from czarist Russia to ancient Rome for inspiration.
“Vera loves clothes beyond loving clothes; she loves everything that has to do with clothes. This is not a make-believe love here; it’s the real thing. Anything that has happened to Vera is a fallout of this love. It’s her only agenda. So she is going to present you clothes in an extremely loving manner: beautiful clothes in the most beautiful way possible.”—Paul Cavaco New York Magazine
“I mean, that I should end up in bridal . . . I might as well have been doing scuba equipment.”—Vera Wang New York Magazine
“If I were to listen to many other voices I would have done a safe product. Would anyone believe that a Sheer Illusion low-cut-back slinky dress would ever have sold in the bridal market? Ten out of ten people would say you are out of your mind. I said there've got to be girls like me who are not 23 and want to look sophisticated and sexy. And if I don't do it nobody else will give them an alternative.”—Vera Wang The New York Times
“Vera's clothes are sexy in an intelligent, fun way.”—Sharon Stone People
