Who Attends New York Fashion Week
For diehard fashion fans, New York Fashion Week is one of the most anticipated events of the year. It’s also closed to the public, making it almost impossible for everyone but the well-connected to attend. Even the fanatics who stake out Bryant Park can’t find a way to tunnel in. The bottom line is that Fashion Week is invitation-only, and only a lucky few can experience it from the front row. Here’s a rundown of who they are.

1) Celebrities. Whether they wear the designers’ clothes or not, celebrities are part of what makes New York Fashion Week one of the industry’s most highly publicized events.

2) Friends of designers. This includes celebrities and the media, but can be anyone the designer chooses. Invitations are generally handed out at the discretion of the designer.

3) Media. A large portion of Fashion Week attendees are there to cover the shows for the public. This includes major media outlets and freelance reporters. All media need to be approved beforehand. For freelancers this means submitting a resume, tear sheets, and letter from their employer.

4) Sponsors. To fill extra seats, invitations are handed out to sponsors of Fashion Week and their employees. This year sponsors include Olympus, ELLE, Sprint, and Continental Airlines, and Inside TV, among others.

5) Clients of designers. Non-celebrities wealthy enough to afford custom-made clothing often end up at designers’ shows.

6) Fashion school students. Select students are offered positions as volunteers with Fashion Week to assist with shows and events.

7) Crashers. Despite the invitation-only rule, somehow some people manage to get into shows without one, whether by stealing an invite or simply sneaking in. This is by no means advised, however.

8) A-list personalities. Unless you’re one of the above, scoring an invitation to a show comes down to knowing the right people and having good connections.
