Farm camps are as old as 4-H, but there’s a hipper crop of agricultural summer programs for children who know the difference between arugula and mizuna. The camps tend to fill up fast—especially the sleepaways—but here are two day programs in Westchester that still had openings as of last week.
STONE BARNS CENTER FOR FOOD & AGRICULTURE
At this farm in Pocantico Hills, campers pasture the sheep and pick cherry tomatoes. Though snacks are prepared on-site, lunch is sadly BYO, considering the compound is also home to organic guru Dan Barber’s famed restaurant Blue Hill. Day camp is $375 a week (stonebarnscenter.org).
TURTLE ISLAND AT HILLTOP HANOVER FARM
At this landmarked Westchester County environmental-ed center, kids might mold sculptures from river mud, hike the trails along the 120-acre Yorktown Heights grounds, or feed off the gardens they maintain. “If they pick the beans, they eat them,” says director Barbara Sarbin. “They earned them.” Day camp is $150 to $250 a week, depending on age; financial aid available (somethinggoodintheworld.org).
