Sniff Out Bill Murray’s Favorite Golf Course

We heard a rumor about Bill Murray...

Not ready to throw down for Trump’s Ferry Point? Richard McDonough, golf director at the Marine Park Golf Course, makes the case for his wallet-friendly greens (from $31).

What’s the history of the course?
Legend has it there was some friction between its designer, Robert Trent Jones Sr., and Robert Moses: The topsoil that was to be delivered to Marine Park was instead sent to the 1964 World’s Fair, so the course was never finished. Michael Giordano took over in 2009 and is finishing off what didn’t get done. It’s a challenging course. And the views! The Verrazano bridge, golden grasses blowing in the wind. Plus, you have all the different types of Brooklyn people. I was going to call it the U.N. of golf, but we actually have a group from the U.N. They’re Japanese and play on Saturdays.

We heard a rumor about Bill Murray …
Bill was filming a movie in Brooklyn, and he wanted to come and hit balls. We brought out all kinds of food, but Bill said, “I appreciate the food, but what we really need is a bottle of tequila.” So we sat there doing shots and hitting balls. Bill showed up another time in a convertible with the film crew in the back and started hitting balls and drinking shots of tequila with me again. His crew was extremely annoyed.
