First Look: Cut and Shave

Sam Buffa’s Barber & Supply flagship in Brooklyn (101 N. 8th St., nr. Wythe Ave., Williamsburg; 718-522-4959) is the latest jewel of his barbershop empire. Buffa is the co-owner of F.S.C. Barber, located in the back room of the venerable Freeman’s Sporting Club, which spawned two other locations, one in the West Village and another in San Francisco. He is also responsible for the restaurants Vinegar Hill House and Hillside, which he helms with his partner, Jean Adamson”both of which he designed. Now with Barber & Supply, he’s turned a former band-rehearsal studio into a space equipped to lavish men with services like the “Hangover Treatment,” which is “really a cleansing facial,” Boffa says, one that involves eucalyptus and rosewater. Standard cut and shaves are also available, while the shop’s apothecary sells everything from Malin + Goetz products to straightedge razors. Photo: Courtesy of F.S.C Barber

The barbershop area is anchored by a sixteen-foot Grand Central”style communal bench designed with hand-bent ash. Hanging out and catching up is part of the experience here. The floors are walnut sourced from naturally grown second-growth trees cleared from land slated for development. Photo: Courtesy of F.S.C Barber

Sam loves unearthing furniture at the Brimfield Antique Show and Flea Market as well as old warehouse sales. His eight sixties-era Belmont barber chairs not only scream Mad Men (they have built in ashtrays, though smoking is not allowed in the shop) and look solid enough to drive cross-country in.
