First Look: Seeing the Light

I recently went out to Long Island City to meet up with the artist Elliott Levine, who is creating a new collection of lamps at his studio in a building on the La Guardia Community College campus. The studio is packed with the work he does for collectors such as Sumner Redstone, Bill Gates, and Diana Ross. Here are some of the prototypes for his Surrealiste and Geometria lamps, which have been sculpted and then cast by hand. Finishes for this collection will be in white, gold, platinum, dark-gray, and Venetian acrylic. Photo: Wendy Goodman

In addition to his lamps, I was also intrigued by Levine’s other artworks: his murals, seen here, and then the canvases stacked up on the floor. Levine has worked on a variety of high-profile design projects, including mixed-material murals commissioned by Milton Glaser for the Rainbow Room and a tapestry collection for interior designer John Saladino. All of Levine’s sculptures can be transformed into lamps. It has taken Levine about four years to finesse his collection of shapes and materials and research New York”based artisans who can create custom lampshades and fixtures. Photo: Wendy Goodman
