First Look: In Rare Form

Frances Palmer is a splendid cook and a wonderful party guest (she often shows up bearing unbelievable flower arrangements from her garden), but it is her pottery for which she’s primarily known. Palmer unveiled these beautiful new pieces at the New York Ceramics Fair last week. “The black stoneware comes from England and absorbs the light in an incredible way,” she says. “The sang de boeuf red was a challenging color to achieve,” Palmer explains. “I mix the glazes by hand and was excited that these reds came out so vibrant and clear.” Photo: Courtesy of Frances Palmer

There is something so timeless about Palmer’s work. While her pieces are fresh and modern, they also have a classical elegance to them. Photo: Courtesy of Frances Palmer

“Most of all, I love to throw in porcelain,” Palmer says. “I strive to make the porcelain as thin and dancerlike as possible and leave it unglazed in order to show off the wonderful translucency of the form.” Photo: Courtesy of Frances Palmer
